AWS Cloud SOC — Detection, Investigation & Automated Response

AWS Cloud SOC — Detection, Investigation & Automated Response — project cover
Personal, authorized AWS lab. This page describes a completed engineering project, not paid SOC work, a production security service, or a response to real attackers. Local dashboard demonstrations contain synthetic fixtures. The October 13, 2026 automatic rollback result comes from a separate, historical live-lab acceptance test.
  • 6 source-reviewed CloudTrail Python heuristics covering root activity, login failures, denied API calls, CloudTrail configuration, IAM permission changes and S3 policy changes.
  • 8 local read-only analyst views, including Overview, Investigations, Case Dossier, Approval Gate, Response Operations, Forensic Audit, Architecture and Settings/Posture.
  • 60-second configured rollback schedule; 84-second observed automatic recovery of the original security group in a controlled personal AWS lab drill on October 13, 2026.
  • Core stack: Python/Boto3, AWS CloudTrail, GuardDuty, EventBridge, Lambda, DynamoDB, SNS, SQS, IAM/SSO, EC2/VPC, CloudWatch, Terraform, Next.js 16/TypeScript and GitHub Actions.
Alerting alone does not establish a usable response process. A defensible security workflow also needs actionable case context, a human decision boundary, tightly scoped execution, a restoration path armed before mutation, and an audit trail that distinguishes automatic recovery from administrator intervention. This project explores those concerns inside a personally controlled AWS lab. CloudTrail API-history hunter. A read-only Python tool examines selected management-event history against six explicit heuristics. These rules flag potentially interesting API behavior; they do not establish malicious intent without investigation. GuardDuty ingestion. Findings are routed through EventBridge to a Lambda enrichment handler, normalized and stored in DynamoDB case records. SNS can notify the analyst. This path is separate from the Python hunting tool. The analyst examines the resulting cases before any authorized response.
Reviewed full-system architecture showing separate CloudTrail and GuardDuty detection routes, human approval, scoped canary execution, recovery-first restoration, and the local read-only analyst cockpit
Architecture reference · Public-safe editorial diagram, not a live infrastructure screenshot. The local cockpit reads evidence; it does not directly authorize or execute AWS mutations.
Portrait architecture map grouping detection, human approval, canary restoration, and the local read-only cockpit into distinct trust boundaries
Full architecture · Portrait format for closer inspection on mobile. Explanatory diagram; no private AWS resources are shown. I implemented a local Next.js 16 analyst cockpit to make detection and response state navigable:
  • Overview: detection metrics, trends, triage breakdown, queue and pipeline.
  • Investigations: search, severity/source/disposition filtering and case inspection.
  • Case dossier: redacted evidence context, analyst rationale and lifecycle.
  • Approval Gate: human-review architecture, cryptographic challenge and separate reviewer permissions.
  • Response Operations: scoped canary perimeter and mixed simulated/historical response fixtures.
  • Forensic Audit: logical append-only model, activity records and completeness warnings.
  • Architecture: trust boundaries and responsibility separation.
  • Settings & Posture: local read-only behavior and configuration views.
All screenshots from the audited offline session are synthetic fixtures. Even UI labels like “LIVE MUTATION” or “VERIFIED READBACK” are fixture content, not evidence of the successful October 13 live test.
Sanitized synthetic AWS Cloud SOC overview displaying demonstration detection indicators, charts, and investigation queue; not live monitoring
01 · SYNTHETIC OFFLINE DASHBOARD — Overview. Demonstration data only; the chart and case totals are not measured AWS production outcomes.
Sanitized synthetic case dossier with an example analyst timeline and explanation of evidence, excluding raw identifiers
02 · SYNTHETIC OFFLINE DASHBOARD — Case dossier. Fixture case and analyst rationale; unrelated to the October 13 historical rollback result.
Sanitized synthetic approval-gate view explaining reviewer permissions and nonce-bound challenge; UI cannot send live approvals
03 · SYNTHETIC OFFLINE DASHBOARD — Human authorization. An explanatory read-only page, not an interactive AWS approval control.
Sanitized synthetic canary response scope view; mock status rows are not the final live automatic rollback proof
04 · SYNTHETIC OFFLINE DASHBOARD — Canary scope. Historical success must be established separately from these fixture rows. During the October 17 browser audit, a Forensic Audit phase-filter defect was observed: phase-filter links changed the URL without filtering the six displayed entries. The audit also identified stale 600-second/10-minute UI labels; those do not represent the historical final 60-second schedule. A finding's priority is not authority to mutate cloud infrastructure. The response plane uses a separate IAM reviewer identity, SigV4-signed requests and challenge/nonce checks. SQS decouples that authorization from downstream Lambda execution. The browser is intentionally read-only. It does not expose approval or containment buttons, and a local mock walkthrough does not execute an AWS mutation. The controlled test target was a disposable, unattached EC2 network interface owned by the personal lab. The response executor validated the approved request and canary scope, persisted the original security-group snapshot, and armed a one-time EventBridge Scheduler rollback before applying the quarantine security group. A separately authorized rollback Lambda could later retrieve the saved baseline, restore the original SG and confirm the actual EC2 state before persisting a final status. This recovery capability was designed to remain available independently of new forward live-containment authorization. | UTC event | Observed result | |---|---| | 18:08:44 | Original SG snapshot persisted; Scheduler recovery armed | | 18:08:45 | Quarantine physically verified | | 18:09:44 | Configured 60-second schedule target | | 18:10:05 | Scheduler delivered the rollback invocation | | 18:10:09 | Original security group restored and verified |
Approved historical October 13, 2026 AWS lab acceptance evidence card showing quarantine at 18:08:45 UTC, 60-second schedule configuration, and verified original security-group restoration at 18:10:09 UTC: 84 seconds observed
HISTORICAL PERSONAL AWS LAB TEST — October 13, 2026. Separate independent acceptance evidence; not a screenshot of the synthetic analyst cockpit. Measured historical quarantine duration: 84 seconds. The 60-second scheduling configuration was not an exact restoration-time guarantee. The historical acceptance document recorded the automatic trigger and worker-based EC2 restoration. Earlier test attempts that required administrator restoration and reconciliation remain classified as manual, not automatic success. Key design controls include scoped IAM permissions, separate human authorization, a disposable canary allowlist, snapshot-first execution, independent rollback, EC2 readback and DynamoDB/CloudWatch evidence.
Sanitized synthetic forensic audit screen demonstrating the logical audit model; filter behavior and completeness must not be represented as verified live capabilities
05 · SYNTHETIC OFFLINE DASHBOARD — Forensic audit explanation. The browser-audited phase filter did not actually filter records; this image is not completeness or cryptographic immutability proof. The audit is logically append-only by policy and role separation, not cryptographically immutable hardware evidence. Out-of-band administrative actions require reconciliation. Some architecture-page network/encryption assurances were not independently established by the browser audit. Source-code logging sanitization was merged in October, but its deployment to the running AWS Lambda packages was not verified as of the reviewed October 17 documentation. Current billing and the current AWS safe-mode state were also not rechecked by the mock-mode browser audit. The reviewed public-safe learning guide covers architecture, six CloudTrail heuristics, EventBridge/GuardDuty ingestion, SigV4 human authorization, scoped canary response, snapshot-first rollback, historical evidence, safe testing, and operational limitations. The guide is educational lab documentation, not a public source-code release, deployed production runbook, or proof that a new live AWS exercise occurred. The PDF and HTML are served as static site assets; check their URLs in a private browsing window after each release.
  • Preserve recovery capability before applying containment.
  • Distinguish analyst triage from authority to act.
  • Make synthetic tests, actual AWS readbacks and historical evidence easy to tell apart.
  • Record failed and manual restorations accurately rather than rewriting them as success.
  • Keep the portfolio UI read-only and minimize the exposure of private infrastructure details.
Portfolio status: Personal cloud security engineering lab documented with public-safe educational visuals. The historical acceptance evidence and offline synthetic dashboard demonstration remain separate.
